WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren signed Resolution CMA-17-26 into law, officially approving the 2025 Navajo Nation Council Reapportionment Plan and establishing updated legislative districts for the next decade.
The plan reflects updated population data and realigns delegate regions while maintaining a 24-member Council. It also respects chapter boundaries, agency regions, and longstanding community connections—though some chapters will now be represented in new districts under the updated map.
Implementation will begin with the 2026 Navajo Nation General Election.
President Nygren recognized the efforts by the Navajo Board of Election Supervisors and its staff, and the extensive work behind the plan, including public hearings across all five agencies and careful evaluation of multiple proposals before final approval.
“By signing this resolution, we are fulfilling our responsibility to adopt a reapportionment plan that reflects current population data and the realities of our regions,” said President Nygren. “Reapportionment is not just a requirement—it is a duty to ensure our governance remains aligned with our people and our communities. Fair and balanced representation strengthens our government and ensures every community has a voice.”
He also highlighted continued efforts to strengthen election operations, including establishing fixed funding to support essential needs like ballots and poll workers. These improvements reduce delays and help ensure elections are conducted efficiently and without unnecessary barriers.
Community members are encouraged to review the updated plan to better understand their representation moving forward.
With the signing of Resolution CMA-17-26, the Navajo Nation adopts a legislative framework that will guide Council representation for the next 10 years.
President Nygren also noted that it is important to recognize Delegate Crotty’s recent emergency legislation proposing amendments to Resolution CMA-17-26, adding that he will review the measure once it comes across his desk.
