WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — On June 27, Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren signed a proclamation officially declaring June 2026 as Navajo Nation Pride Month, reaffirming the Navajo Nation’s commitment to dignity, equality, respect, and inclusion for all Diné people, including LGBTQ+ and Two-Spirit relatives.
Despite gusty winds throughout the outdoor celebration, community members gathered alongside local vendors, artists, performers, and advocates to celebrate Pride and the diversity of the Navajo Nation. The event showcased Indigenous creativity, culture, and community while providing a space for connection, visibility, and support.
The proclamation acknowledges that LGBTQ+ and Two-Spirit relatives have always been an integral part of Navajo families, communities, culture, and history. It recognizes their contributions as leaders, educators, artists, veterans, healthcare professionals, spiritual leaders, and advocates who strengthen the Navajo Nation every day.
Grounded in Diné teachings of K’é, the proclamation emphasizes that every individual carries inherent worth and sacred purpose, reaffirming the Nation’s commitment to protecting the civil and human rights of all citizens while opposing discrimination in all forms.
President Nygren also recognized the work of organizations such as Diné Equality and Navajo Nation Pride, whose advocacy, education, and community outreach continue to promote understanding, acceptance, and wellness throughout the Navajo Nation.
By signing the proclamation, President Nygren called upon the Navajo people to celebrate the diversity of the Nation, honor the contributions of LGBTQ+ and Two-Spirit relatives, and continue building communities rooted in respect, compassion, fairness, and unity.
“Together, we move forward as One Navajo Nation—stronger because of our diversity, united by our shared humanity, and guided by the teachings of our traditional way of life and Holy People,” the proclamation states.
