KINLICHEE, Ariz. — Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren joined runners from across the Navajo Nation and beyond on Saturday morning to participate in the Miss Navajo Nation 2025–2026 First Annual Fluted Rock Half Marathon, hosted by Miss Navajo Nation Camille J. Uentillie in her hometown of Kinlichee.
The inaugural event brought together community members of all ages to celebrate health, wellness, and Diné values through running. Inspired by the teachings of Hózhó Naasháa Dooleeł—walking in beauty and living a balanced life—the marathon encouraged participants to strengthen both their physical and spiritual well-being while experiencing the scenic landscapes surrounding Kinlichee.
President Nygren completed the half marathon alongside fellow runners, demonstrating his continued commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles throughout the Navajo Nation.
Throughout his administration, President Nygren has consistently supported initiatives that encourage physical activity, youth engagement, and community wellness, recognizing that preventive health begins with active and connected communities.
“The message behind today’s run extends far beyond crossing the finish line,” said President Nygren. “Events like this remind us that wellness is part of our way of life. By coming together through running, we honor our teachings, support one another, and inspire future generations to live healthy, active lives.”
The race followed an out-and-back course beginning near the Kinlichee Chapter, guiding participants through rolling terrain surrounded by Navajo sandstone canyons, grazing livestock, and the natural beauty of the area. The event also highlighted the rich cultural history of Kinlichee, sharing oral traditions about the community’s name and the ancestral homes that remain within the surrounding canyon walls.
Congratulations were extended to the top finishers of the inaugural event. In the full marathon, Santiago Hardy claimed first place with a time of 3:08:22, followed by Jeremy LaBuff (3:24:20) and Lewis Millholland (3:30:40). In the half marathon, Wacey Begay finished first in 1:42:22, followed by Hayden Chee (1:43:51) and Alvin Begay (1:44:45).
President Nygren thanked Miss Navajo Nation Camille J. Uentillie, the Office of Miss Navajo Nation, Navajo YES, Rocky Mountain Timing, volunteers, sponsors, medical personnel, and public safety teams for organizing a successful inaugural marathon and creating an event that united culture, wellness, and community.
