The Navajo Nation continues working to maximize available federal Homeowner Assistance Fund (HAF) resources by increasing the amount of assistance available to eligible homeowners facing high mortgage costs.

On Aug. 7, Navajo Nation President Dr. Buu Nygren officially signed Modification #3 to the Navajo Homeowner Assistance Fund (NHAF) Subrecipient Agreement, approving changes that increase the maximum Mortgage Principal Reduction Assistance (MPRA) grant by $100,000 and make the increase retroactive for homeowners who have already received assistance through the program.

Under the updated guidelines:

• Eligible households with at least one homeowner age 55 or older may now qualify for up to $325,000 in mortgage principal reduction assistance, an increase from $225,000.
• All other eligible households may now qualify for up to $275,000, up from $175,000.

The modification also raises the overall maximum amount of assistance available per eligible household from $275,000 to $375,000.

According to the amendment, the increase is intended to better address rising housing costs and higher mortgage balances in high-cost housing markets while ensuring that remaining federal HAF funding is fully utilized before the program concludes. The retroactive provision means homeowners who previously received Mortgage Principal Reduction Assistance may also benefit from the higher funding limits if they meet program requirements.

By signing this amendment, President Nygren authorized the updated assistance limits, helping eligible Navajo families reduce mortgage debt, strengthen long-term housing stability, and make full use of available federal homeowner assistance resources before the program expires.

The Navajo Nation Department of Justice reviewed the amendment and determined there was no additional financial impact requiring further review by the Office of the Controller or Office of Management and Budget because the modification reallocates existing program funds rather than appropriating new funding.

This action reflects the Navajo Nation’s continued commitment to ensuring available federal homeowner assistance reaches eligible families while strengthening housing stability and maximizing the impact of existing HAF resources.
