WINDOW ROCK — Excitement reached another level at Miss Navajo Nation’s Eggstravaganza on April 5 as Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren and First Lady Jasmine Blackwater-Nygren joined families gathered around the bright red fire engine from the Fort Defiance Fire Department, proudly on display for the community.

During the event, Jennifer Collins, Fire Lieutenant of the Fort Defiance Fire Department shared insights into the role of firefighters and the opportunities available for community members to get involved.

President Nygren praised the department’s commitment.

“Our firefighters are out there every day protecting our communities,” said President Nygren. “It’s not just important work—it’s inspiring. It’s cool to see our people step up, train hard, and be ready to help at any moment.”

The Navajo Nation Fire Department operates eight stations across the Nation, offering both paid and volunteer positions. Applicants must meet basic requirements, including a valid driver’s license and high school diploma or GED, and complete background checks. Recruit positions are available for those new to the field, with training provided through a Fire Academy.

Lieutenant Collins highlighted the critical role volunteers play, especially in rural areas where long response times, limited infrastructure, and communication challenges persist. Community members are often the first on scene, making fire safety education, CPR, and first aid training essential tools for saving lives.

The department also focuses on prevention and youth engagement, teaching fire safety in schools and community events to build awareness and inspire future firefighters.

President Nygren encouraged young people to consider careers in fire service.

“It’s not only a profession but a calling rooted in protecting family, community, and future generations,” he said.
