Window Rock, Ariz. – Stir sticks whisked away as this year’s Miss Navajo contestants worked on their Chiłth chin, some perfected the mixture of their blood sausage, and others finished kneading their dough.

A large crowd gathered to cheer and show support for the six contestants as they participated in the Sheep Butchering and Traditional Foods competition. This year is the 72nd year of the prestigious pageant where many resilient Diné women vie for the honorary title that is know around the world.

“The Miss Navajo Nation title showcases our young women and the skills handed down to them from generations past that grounds them to be independent Diné women,” said President Nygren. “Miss Navajo is a matriarch that represents the strength of our sisters, aunties, mothers, and grandmas.”

Over the next week the contestants will be judged for their business knowledge in an interview session, their traditional and contemporary skills knowledge, and comprehension of the sacred Diné language.

“The First Lady and I send our best wishes to the six amazing young ladies vying for the Miss Navajo title,” added the President. “The families of Ms. Niaomi Benally, Ranisha Begay, Kiana Toadlena, Dayhenoa Yazzie, Taneesha Francis, and Quandinna Begay should be proud.”

The competition will continue through the week in the Window Rock area. The new Miss Navajo Nation 2024-2025 will be crowned during a coronation at the Window Rock fairgrounds and be introduced by President Nygren at the Dean C. Jackson Memorial Arena later Saturday night.
