SHIPROCK, N.M. — Last weekend, I had the opportunity to join runners, families, elders, veterans, volunteers, and visitors from across the country at the annual Shiprock Marathon weekend—one of the oldest and largest running events on the Navajo Nation. It was a powerful reminder of what can happen when our communities come together to encourage one another and push ourselves to grow.
For me personally, this weekend marked the completion of my first full marathon. Last year, standing at the same finish line, I told people that I would come back and run the marathon in 2026. At that time, I was in no shape to run. So to return one year later and complete 26.2 miles was emotional and deeply meaningful.
What stood out most to me last weekend was the incredible spirit of community. Families lined the course cheering runners on, volunteers worked tirelessly at hydration and safety stations, and participants encouraged each other every step of the way. Whether someone was running the marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K, youth races, or the Elder Run, every person brought energy, determination, and inspiration.
I want to sincerely thank NavajoYES organizers, our veterans, volunteers, supporters, and everyone who traveled to the Navajo Nation to participate in this special weekend. Seeing our people come together in such a positive and uplifting way was something I will never forget.
