Today, we honor the mothers, grandmothers, and aunties whose love, strength, and teachings continue to guide our Navajo Nation. In Diné culture, motherhood extends far beyond one person—it is carried by the women who raise us, pray for us, protect us, and pass down our values from generation to generation.
As Diné people, we are a matrilineal society. We are born into our mother’s clan, and through our mothers we first learn kindness, discipline, and hózhǫ́—the balance and beauty that grounds our way of life. Our mothers are the foundation of our families and the heart of our communities.
I want to wish a Happy Mother’s Day to my wife, Jasmine Blackwater-Nygren, an incredible mother to our two children and a strong leader who continues to uplift families across the Navajo Nation. I am grateful every day for the love, patience, and guidance she brings to our home and our people.
I also carry the teachings of my late mother, Charlotte Slim Tony, and my grandmother, who raised me with strength, humility, and hard work. Their sacrifices shaped who I am today and continue to inspire my service to the Navajo people.
Across the Navajo Nation, mothers are leading in our homes, schools, businesses, healthcare systems, and communities.
Our administration remains committed to supporting women and families through investments in healthcare, education, childcare, housing, and early childhood programs that strengthen future generations.
Today, and every day, we honor the strength of our Diné Asdzáán. Thank you for the sacrifices you make, the prayers you carry, and the love you give so freely and unconditionally to our families and communities.
Happy Mother’s Day to all our mothers across the Navajo Nation.
