WINDOW ROCK — Fresh off a championship season that brought pride to their school and community, the Tuba City Lady Warriors were honored on April 6, where Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren recognized their hard work, unity, and the example they’ve set for young people across the Nation.
President Nygren welcomed the team to the Office of the President and Vice President, celebrating their outstanding season and achievement as Arizona’s 3A Copper State Champions.
Led by Head Coach Pete Butler, the Lady Warriors secured the title in February with a 59–54 victory over the Snowflake Lady Lobos at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix. The Copper Championship featured top teams across the 1A–3A conferences, making it a highly competitive and respected title. The team finished the season with an impressive 28–3 overall record and 11–1 region record, with freshman Layla Curtis earning tournament MVP honors.
While in Window Rock, the team walked through Navajo Nation Veterans Memorial Park before gathering in the Stateroom, where players, coaches, and staff reflected on their season. The room was filled with pride and laughter as they shared the perseverance, discipline, and teamwork that led to their championship run. Curtis noted that the team’s strong bond and chemistry—built from years of playing together—was a key factor in their success.
Players also recognized Coach Butler and assistant coaches Jonessa Reid, Brittney Laughter, and Sharlimar Navaho for their leadership and support. Coach Butler highlighted the team’s work ethic and coachability, emphasizing the role each player played in their success.
The team shared lunch with President Nygren, where conversations centered on future goals. Underclassmen spoke about continuing to build on this success, while seniors reflected on their next steps. Aubrey Begaye announced her commitment to Park University in Gilbert, AZ to play collegiate basketball, and Thalia Clitso will continue her academic and athletic career at Glendale Community College to play volleyball.
As a token of appreciation, the team presented President Nygren with a signed basketball featuring all team members’ names.
President Nygren congratulated the team and shared words of encouragement, recognizing their accomplishments and the pride they bring to the Navajo Nation.
“I am incredibly proud of each and every one of you,” said President Nygren. “You represented your school, your families, and the Navajo Nation with pride, discipline, and heart. Your teamwork and dedication set an example for our young people, and your success shows what can be achieved when you stay committed and support one another.”
