Competing against some of the top collegiate runners in the country, two Native American student-athletes from Northern Arizona University delivered standout, record-setting performances at the prestigious Stanford Invitational this past weekend.

Hayley Burns, a Northern Cheyenne tribal member, set a new NAU school record in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 15:18.26, finishing second overall and placing herself among the nation’s top competitors this season.

Navajo runner Ali Upshaw also made history, breaking both the NAU and Big Sky Conference records in the 10,000-meter race with a time of 32:22.4, marking a major milestone for the program and further elevating Native representation in collegiate distance running.

Both athletes showcased exceptional discipline, endurance, and determination while competing at one of the most competitive meets in the NCAA.
Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren recognized their achievements, highlighting the commitment and resilience required to reach this level.

“These accomplishments reflect countless hours of preparation, sacrifice, and discipline,” said President Nygren. “We are proud to see Native athletes excelling at the highest levels and representing their communities with strength and determination.”

Their performances not only set new records but also serve as inspiration for the next generation of Native athletes, demonstrating what is possible through hard work, focus, and perseverance.
