SHIPROCK, N.M. — The second annual 928 Hoops Arizona–New Mexico Showcase brought high-level competition and excitement to the Chieftain Pit on April 4, as top high school basketball athletes from across both states competed in a highly anticipated matchup.
The showcase featured some of the region’s most talented and decorated student-athletes, including state champions and standout players from multiple classifications. Many Navajo student-athletes representing schools across Arizona and New Mexico took part in the event, highlighting the strength and depth of basketball talent across the Navajo Nation.
In the girls game, Team Arizona secured a 113–105 victory in a high-scoring contest. Arizona’s Most Valuable Player honors went to Tayla Franklin of Page High, who led her team with 27 points. New Mexico’s MVP was Zoey Benally of Kirtland Central High, who contributed 18 points in a strong effort.
In the boys game, Team Arizona again came out on top with a 117–106 win. Arizona’s MVP was Hashke Nelson of Coconino High, who scored 25 points, while New Mexico’s MVP honors went to Trajen West of Rehoboth Christian, who also finished with 25 points.
The event drew a large crowd, with community members, families, and basketball supporters filling the stands to watch the showcase. Athletes competed alongside peers from different schools, many of whom do not regularly play together, yet demonstrated strong chemistry, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout the games.
The showcase also featured several athletes who have recently competed on the state’s biggest stages and others who have committed to continue their basketball careers at the collegiate level.
“Basketball has always been an important part of our communities across the Navajo Nation,” said President Nygren. “It was great to see so many of our Navajo athletes competing at a high level and representing their schools and communities with pride.“
The Arizona–New Mexico Showcase continues to serve as a platform to highlight regional talent shared across the Navajo Nation.
