MONTEZUMA CREEK, Utah — Expanding access to quality healthcare for Navajo families, especially in rural and underserved areas, remains a top priority for Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren.
On April 3, President Nygren met with leaders from the Utah Navajo Health System (UNHS) to learn more about their services and explore opportunities to strengthen healthcare access for Navajo communities in southeastern Utah and surrounding areas.
During the visit, UNHS leadership provided an overview of their comprehensive services, including primary care, behavioral health, dental care, pharmacy, and community health programs. These services play a critical role in addressing healthcare needs in rural communities, where access to care can often be limited.
The discussion also focused on future opportunities to expand services, including home healthcare programs and additional patient-centered initiatives aimed at improving health outcomes and overall quality of life. UNHS, as a tribally operated healthcare system, continues to provide culturally grounded and holistic care designed to reduce health disparities and support long-term wellness.
In addition to learning about current services, President Nygren and healthcare leaders engaged in broader discussions on Navajo health initiatives and long-term strategies to strengthen the healthcare system across the Navajo Nation.
President Nygren emphasized the importance of exploring innovative solutions, including the potential for self-funding major healthcare infrastructure such as the Gallup Indian Medical Center, to better meet the needs of Navajo patients. Discussions also included the possibility of expanding UNHS involvement in regional care, including exploring management opportunities at the Red Mesa Clinic to enhance services, improve access, and create local job opportunities.
Leaders also highlighted the importance of community support, continued legislative advocacy, and building strong partnerships to ensure sustainable healthcare solutions. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to continue exploring collaboration, funding opportunities, and strategies that will strengthen healthcare delivery across Navajo communities.
This visit reinforced a unified effort between the Navajo Nation and UNHS to improve coordination, expand services, and ensure that Navajo families have access to reliable, high-quality care close to home.
President Nygren reaffirmed his commitment to advancing healthcare initiatives that prioritize the well-being of Navajo people and support long-term improvements in access, infrastructure, and community health outcomes.
