WHIPPOORWILL and FOREST LAKE, Ariz. – A large food distribution event was held on June 7 and June 10 at Whippoorwill and Forest Lake chapter houses. This distributions began at 9 a.m., with vehicles lined up early in the morning. Providing much-needed support to families in the community.
This was made possible through a $5.5 million grant that our Navajo Nation Washington Office applied for on behalf of our people. President Nygren signed an agreement with NAPI to distribute 49,333 food boxes to our Diné people, an effort to address food insecurity across the Navajo Nation. So far, 14,949 food boxes have been given away.
The event was made possible through a grant, through collaboration between the Navajo Agricultural Products Industry (NAPI), the Office of the Navajo Nation President, and local chapter leadership.
Many residents were served with dry food items, vegetables and beans. The distribution was beneficial for elders, families with limited transportation, those facing food insecurity.
Chapter staff and volunteers worked together to ensure a smooth and organized process.
NAPI delivered locally grown vegetables like potatoes reinforcing efforts to promote food sovereignty and sustainable agriculture within the Navajo Nation.
The Office of the President staffers assisted with coordination and helped connect community members with additional tribal services and resources.
The food distribution event served not only as a source of essential supplies but as a reminder of the strength and resilience of the Whippoorwill community.
“This distribution is part of a greater movement to restore our relationship with the land, support our elders and families, and reclaim food sovereignty for the Navajo Nation. Through partnerships like this we can provide direct service and commitment to supporting our communities ensuring that future generations have access to healthy, traditional, and locally grown food.” said Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren.
The next food distributions will be:
- June 12 at Toadlena/Grey Hills
- June 14 at Pinon
- June 17 at Tselani/Cottonwood
- June 19 at Gadiiahi/Tokoi
- June 21 at Nazlini, and
- June 24 at Chinle
Thank you to all who have contributed to this effort of getting food to our communities!
