ST. MICHAELS, Ariz. – St. Michael Indian School celebrated the dedication and ribbon cutting of its new gymnasium with students, staff, alumni, community members, and leadership gathering to mark a major milestone for the school and surrounding community.
The event began with a ribbon cutting ceremony outside the new gymnasium followed by a traditional blessing and benediction.
During the ceremony, speakers highlighted the importance of athletics, leadership, education, and community connection. Sharen Sandoval, Chief of Staff for the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President, spoke on behalf of Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren and emphasized the positive role team sports play in youth development and leadership.
“This building will create opportunities for students to grow as leaders, teammates, and community members,” Sandoval said. “Facilities like this help keep communities connected while creating safe spaces for future generations.”
Sandoval also highlighted ongoing efforts under President Nygren’s administration to expand educational opportunities through increased scholarships and broadband initiatives across the Navajo Nation.
Several speakers reflected on the years of planning, prayer, and community support that made the project possible, while recognizing the contributions of construction crews, heavy equipment operators, painters, school leadership, and supporters who helped bring the new facility to life.
School leadership shared excitement about the future of the gymnasium, including plans to host regional volleyball and basketball events while working toward bringing more home games back to campus in the years ahead.
The ceremony concluded with community members touring the new facility and celebrating a project many described as a long-awaited blessing for students, families, and future generations.
