WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren congratulated Farmington High School student-athletes Marley Deswood and Hannah Yazzie after the duo captured the 2026 NMAA Class 5A Girls Doubles State Championship at the New Mexico State Tennis Championships.

Deswood and Yazzie battled back after dropping the first set in the championship match, defeating Rio Rancho in a hard-fought three-set comeback victory, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Their performance helped highlight a historic season for Farmington High School, as the Lady Scorpions also secured the overall Class 5A Girls Team State Championship with a 5-1 victory over Santa Fe. The title also marked a memorable final season for longtime head coach Pat McGrath, who retired after 33 years of coaching and nine state championships.

President Nygren praised the determination and resilience shown by both athletes throughout the state tournament.

“Marley Deswood and Hannah Yazzie showed incredible heart in that championship match,” President Nygren said. “After losing the first set, they stayed focused, trusted each other, and fought back point by point to win a state title. That kind of perseverance says a lot about their character, their teamwork, and the pride they carry for Farmington High School and our Navajo people.”

President Nygren also recognized the growing impact Navajo student-athletes continue to make across New Mexico and beyond.

“Your hard work inspired many young athletes across the Navajo Nation,” he added. “We are proud of you both and excited to see what you accomplish next.”

Congratulations again to Marley Deswood, Hannah Yazzie, Coach Pat McGrath, and the entire Farmington High School girls tennis program on an outstanding championship season.
