TOHATCHI, N.M. – The Gallup-McKinley County School District will build 10 new schools and a trade school on the Navajo Nation.
The new Tohatchi High School will be a state-of-the-art school that reflects the pride of local residents and a gym that can hold 2,000 fans.
“Our children are our future,” Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren said. “Everything we do is to refine their mindset to prepare them for their future.”
“It is all about the hopes and dreams that you represent for your families. Our elders get up each and every day to pray for the hopes and dreams that you represent for your families.”
Bradbury Stamm Construction of Albuquerque will start construction on the $68 million educational facility in April. Out of 32 Gallup-McKinley County schools, 13 are located on the Navajo Nation.
“Tohatchi High School will be more than just classrooms,” said Gallup-McKinley County School Board member Kevin Mitchell said. “It will be a hub for inspiration and innovation. Our students will have access to a state-of-the-art facility to help their dreams come true.”
In attendance were officials from the New Mexico Public Education Department, the Gallup-McKinley County school Board, Principal Moore, and Council Delegates Nathan Notah, Vince James and Andy Nez.
The President said Navajo schools aren’t just for education but for communities to use for wedding receptions, social gatherings and other community events. This is because they are often the most spacious facilities that can accommodate gatherings.
Plans like the Tohatchi High School come to reality when everyone puts differences aside and work together, he said.
