WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – On May 31, the Dean C. Jackson arena was filled once again with rodeo fans for day two of the PRCA Rodeo. This second day was Navajo Elders Night, highlighting “Our Sacred Keepers of Fire, Wisdom & Life.”

There were about 23 Team Navajo contestants that competed throughout the night with entertainment from Rider Kiesner and Bethany Iles. This event was free for elders 65 and older.

Each Navajo contestant came out and showcased their best performances by applying the hard work they have done to prepare for the rodeo. Some competed against other champion title holders and some qualified for the NFR.

Navajo Nation President cheered for each contestant as they proudly represented the Navajo Nation as they each gave a performance that was filled with pride and determination.

He highlighted the important roles that elders hold within the community and Navajo families. In doing so, he encouraged radio listeners and attendees to show appreciation to elders by greeting and thanking them for their presence.

“They are the ones that taught us how to ride,” President Nygren said. “They’re the ones that taught us what it means to be with our animals, what it means to be Navajo.”

The hosting of The Home of the Navajo PRCA Rodeo allows young rodeo athletes to represent the communities they come from, allowing them to stay grounded in who they are as a Navajo cowboy or cowgirl.

“Remember where you come from, from the strong resilient, tough people that have grit,” said President Nygren.

Special thanks to Navajo Department of Health for empowering strong community development and for their dedicated efforts in fostering the health and well-being of the Navajo people.
