WHITE CONE, Ariz. – Elders rejoiced with friends and enjoyed time with the community through song and dance, physical well-being activities, and a catered meal at the White Cone multi-purpose complex on Friday in honor of Older American Month.
“Our elders hold teachings and are a link to our ancestors carrying so much knowledge,” said President Nygren. “Every day is elder day. This month, we recognize all of our May as older Americans month, but for us, Díné elders month.”
On Fri., May 10, President Nygren joined the Navajo Nation Division of Aging and Long Term Aging Support, Division of Social
Services Agency Council on Aging, signing a proclamation declaring May as Older Americans Month.
It took no time for President Nygren to be among the elders, shaking hands and, most importantly, hearing their concerns.
“Our elders have endured a lot of trauma for the sake of us,” said President Nygren. “We all can achieve great things because our elders took those first steps. We, in return, need to do the same.”
In total, 305 elders were in attendance, awaiting President Nygren’s appearance for the proclamation signing.
As he signed a proclamation honoring the community’s elders, they gathered by his side, proud to be recognized and heard.
“It’s graduation season, and many of our young ones are taking the next big step in life,” said President Nygren. “That step would not be possible if it wasn’t for our elders who taught us about who we are as Díné but also taught us to be strong in a society we weren’t supposed to thrive in like we are.”
