WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. –After a historic water rights win, further litigation on the water rights will continue, and so will the cost.

The 25th Navajo Nation Council approved resolution CMY 27-24, approving $4,000,000 from the Unreserved Undesignated Fund Balance for the Navajo Nation Department of Justice Water Rights Litigation Unit to Continue Litigating and Protecting the Navajo Nation’s Water Rights.

“I am signing this resolution into law just days after signing into law Resolution No. CMY-26-24 approving the Northeastern Arizona Indian Water Rights Settlement and the resolution approving the settlement for the Rio San Jose Stream System and the Rio Puerco Basin in New Mexico,” the President said.

This resolution will provide funding for continued support from a strong team of technical and legal experts working on the Nation’s water rights.

This team helped bring these water settlements to this point, and this funding proves critical to defend water rights work moving forward.

“The most precious resource to the Navajo People is water.”
