WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – Women Veterans Recognition Day is celebrated on June 12 every year to honor and recognize the contributions and sacrifices of women who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
This day is significant because it marks the anniversary of the signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948, which allowed women to serve as permanent members of the military.
This historic legislation marked a significant milestone in the history of women’s participation in the military, and it has since enabled millions of women to serve their country.
When President Nygren took office, he established a community engagement team that bridges communication between the community and himself, and a part of the team is a Veteran Affairs Representative who actively aids the nation’s veterans with their concerns and needs.
“We know our Navajo women, our mothers, grandmas, are tough, they are strong, they care for the land, herd sheep, chop wood, and care for the family, they are nurturing and kind,” said President Nygren. “No one else knows the pressure these women endured to show they belong and should be in the armed forces. They paved paths for our women, native women, and we are forever grateful and proud.”
