CHINLE, Ariz. – In front of a 24-hour Hogan that is a haven from abuse, Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren signed a proclamation declaring May as MMDR month.
Ama Doo Alchini Bighan is a 24-hour healing shelter that has taken a stand against domestic violence and brought to President Nygren’s attention their around-the-clock dedication to helping families impacted by domestic violence or missing and murdered relatives.
“When I was here a couple of years ago when I was running for President, I was inspired by the work being done here,” said President Nygren. “I knew when I became President that this is a place I’d never forget, and it’s a community I wanted to ensure got assistance.”
In support of President Nygren was Chinle Council Delegate Shawna Ann Claw who also gave the prayer at the gathering.
“Every week, on my radio address, for over a year now, I read the names of people who have gone missing,” said President Nygren. “I’m big on asking what has been done. I can give a good speech, but if it’s not being backed up by action, then what’s the point?”
According to the National Institute of Justice, about 83% of American Indians and Alaskan Natives have experienced a form of violence in their lifetime.
President Nygren wanted to ensure there’s action behind his words for not only the 83% but to raise awareness so that the number goes down.
After the signing, President Nygren joined the families and the community in an awareness walk, holding signs, and horns honking from passersby.
“I am proud to be here signing this proclamation,” said President Nygren. “We are taking a stance as a Nation to support the families who have endured such tragedy and trauma. The road the healing is a journey, let us life up our relatives daily and pray for them.”
