A Small School with a Big Heart: ‘We Are Rock Point’ Celebrates 2025 Graduates
In the culturally rich community of Rock Point, I had the pleasure of addressing the Class of 2025 Rock Point Cougars. With 12 graduates, parents, families, alumni, and community, the gymnasium was filled with pride
The Pledge of Allegiance was stated by Miss Rock Point, Quinntana Tom and Little Miss Rock Point, Isabella Davis, followed by the National Anthem, sang by Miss Rock Point Veteran Princess in Navajo.
During the commencement address by Ral’Shaun Descheny, a Rock Point alum, he shared a few words about what it meant to be back home and reflected on his academic journey with the support of his community.
“This placed raised me, this community shaped me…,” said Descheny. “Do not be afraid to leave, but don’t forget where you come from.”
With these remarks, it shows a reflection that no matter how small a school is the community leaves an impact because great leaders come from strong communities. It also encourages us to find our way back home to show how capable we are to succeed in life.
As President, I acknowledged each graduate’s efforts as they refused to give up and still showed up for themselves. Our students are filled with strength and heart; they are shaped by the values of our Navajo way of life.
Laci Attakai was named the Valedictorian and Ayash Tso was named the Salutatorian. Both received scholarships to help pay for their college. The Department of Diné Education presented a laptop to student Maris Johnjay.
