IYANBITO, N.M. — Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren signed a $377,838.09 road maintenance contract with DJOE Construction on May 27 to improve Burnt Corn Road, located south of the Iyanbito Chapter.
The project, funded through two New Mexico Capital Outlay appropriations, will cover two miles of roadway. Construction is expected to begin as soon as a contract number is issued.
Residents can expect minor traffic delays during the project. One lane will remain open throughout construction, with a possible detour onto Dakota Loop to maintain traffic flow.
“This project represents our commitment to improving everyday life for our people,” President Nygren said. “Reliable roads are essential for access to healthcare, education and economic opportunity.”
The route, referred to in the project title as Burnt Corn and Iyanbito, is known locally as Burnt Corn Road and serves as a key connection for the community. This road is vital for Iyanbito, with about 1,500 residents relying on it daily, especially as an emergency route. When I-40 closes, many use Burnt Corn Road to reconnect with I-40, highlighting its importance for safety and accessibility.
The roadwork is part of a broader effort under the Nygren administration to enhance infrastructure across the Navajo Nation.
