The Navajo Nation proudly recognizes Andy Johnson, a Navajo machinist and aerospace professional whose work continues to contribute to major advancements in space and defense technology while serving as an inspiration to future generations of Diné students.

Johnson is Ta’neeszahnii (Tangle People Clan), born for the Hooghan Łání (Many Hogans Clan). His maternal grandfather’s clan is Bit’ahnii (Under His Cover Clan), and his paternal grandfather’s clan is Tódích’íi’nii (Bitter Water Clan).

Now in his third year with Sierra Space, Johnson has built a career spanning more than two decades in machining and manufacturing. His expertise includes manual machining, CNC operations, EDM wire cutting, precision fabrication, and advanced manufacturing processes that support aerospace, defense, and space exploration technologies.

Among his most notable accomplishments is his work on the Dream Chaser spaceplane, an innovative spacecraft developed by Sierra Space. Johnson held a lead position on the Dream Chaser program for approximately 1.5 years and personally fabricated numerous components used in the spacecraft’s construction. Designed to transport cargo and eventually crew members to the International Space Station and future low-Earth orbit destinations, Dream Chaser is helping shape the future of commercial spaceflight and expanding humanity’s access to space.

Johnson’s journey reflects a commitment to lifelong learning and professional growth. He earned his Associate of Applied Science degree from San Juan College, an institution that has helped prepare countless students throughout the Four Corners region for successful careers in technical and professional fields. Seeking to further expand his knowledge and skills, Johnson continued his education in 2022 and 2023 through Front Range Community College, studying intermediate and advanced CNC machining as well as Mastercam software programming.

Before entering the aerospace industry, Johnson developed his skills through projects across the Navajo Nation and the Four Corners area. His experience included work supporting the Navajo Engineering and Construction Authority, Navajo Agricultural Products Industry, BHP San Juan operations, and regional refinery projects. These opportunities helped build the foundation that would eventually lead him into one of the nation’s most advanced industries.

Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren praised Johnson for representing the Navajo people at the forefront of aerospace innovation.

“Andy’s accomplishments are something our Navajo people can be proud of,” said President Nygren. “Seeing Navajo representation in aerospace and space exploration sends a powerful message to our young people that they can pursue any path and succeed at the highest levels while still carrying pride in who they are and where they come from.”

While contributing to cutting-edge aerospace technology, Johnson remains committed to giving back to his people. Looking ahead, he hopes to return home and establish a machine shop on the Navajo Nation, creating opportunities for local employment, technical training, and economic growth while sharing the knowledge and experience he has gained throughout his career.

The Navajo Nation proudly recognizes Andy Johnson for his dedication, perseverance, and commitment to excellence. His story demonstrates that Navajo talent can thrive in the world’s most advanced industries while remaining grounded in culture, community, and a desire to create opportunities for future generations.
