WINDOW ROCK — Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren extends recognition to Mabelle Hueston following her appointment by California Governor Gavin Newsom to the University of California Board of Regents.

Hueston, a Diné leader and educator, currently serves as President and Executive Director of “Nihizaad Nizhoni,” a non profit that focuses on language preservation. Her career spans decades of service in education, including roles at Dartmouth College and California State University at Long Beach, where she supported Native student success and taught American Indian Studies.

She has also dedicated years to teaching the Navajo language in community-based programs across Southern California.

Her leadership extends to several national and academic boards, and she holds a Master of Education from Harvard University and a Bachelor of Arts in History from Dartmouth College.

“This appointment reflects Mabelle Hueston’s lifelong commitment to education and advocacy for Native communities,” said President Nygren. “We are proud to see her leadership recognized at this level.”
