I recently had the opportunity to meet with Diné students at the University of New Mexico during a special gathering hosted by the UNM Diné Language and Culture Club and the Native American Studies Department. Spending time with our students who are pursuing higher education is always meaningful and reminds me how important it is for our Nation to invest in the next generation of leaders.

During the meet-and-greet, we had a great conversation about my own educational journey and the experiences that shaped my path to public service. I shared with students that perseverance, strong family support, and staying connected to our Diné identity can help guide us through challenges along the way. Seeing these young leaders working toward undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. degrees is inspiring and gives me great confidence in the future of the Navajo Nation.

We also discussed how my Administration is working to strengthen opportunities for Navajo students through expanded educational funding and infrastructure investments that support our communities back home. This includes increasing scholarship opportunities for Navajo students and securing funding for critical development projects such as water infrastructure, broadband access, and utility improvements across the Navajo Nation.

I encouraged the students to continue pursuing their education while remaining connected to their culture, language, and communities. Our Nation needs leaders in every field—from education and health care to engineering, law, and public service.

I want to thank Dr. Wendy Greyeyes of the UNM Native American Studies Department, the UNM Diné Language and Culture Club leadership including President Anthony Cruz and Vice President Daniel Etsitty, and everyone who helped organize this meaningful discussion.

Ahéhee’ as well to June Manning and Nusenda Credit Union for sponsoring lunch for the students.

Connecting with our Diné students on university campuses is an important part of ensuring their voices are heard and that we continue building a stronger future for the Navajo Nation.
