Today, I share in a moment of immense pride for the Navajo Nation as we celebrate the achievements of our Diné student athletes on a national stage.

I extend my congratulations to the Pima Community College women’s basketball team for capturing its first NJCAA Division II National Championship in history. This victory showed determination, unity and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

I especially recognize two of our own Navajo athletes whose efforts helped lead this championship run.

Melicia Nelson, a 19-year-old sophomore point guard from Fort Defiance and a nursing major, delivered an outstanding performance on the national stage.

In the championship game, she recorded 20 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, one steal and one block. Her all-around excellence earned her the title of Tournament MVP, proof of her leadership, discipline and heart.

Standing alongside her is Ahdiayh Chee, a 20-year-old shooting guard majoring in liberal arts and psychology. Her dedication and contributions throughout the season played a vital role in the team’s success and championship finish.

The Aztecs closed their season on an incredible 18 game winning streak, to finish with a historic 30-4 record, marking the program’s first 30-game win season.

These young women carry the strength and spirit of the Navajo Nation with them. They inspire the next generation to dream big, work hard and remain grounded in who they are and where they come from.

To Melicia, Ahdiayh and to the entire team, you have made your people proud. Continue to walk in beauty and lead with purpose.
