WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — On March 5, 2026, Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren signed a letter of acceptance authorizing the Navajo Nation to receive a $2.25 million infrastructure appropriation for improvements to Navajo Route 41 (N41). The funding originates from the Peabody Settlement and was approved through the Joint Committee with Responsibility for Infrastructure Commitment in accordance with Black Mesa Review Board Resolution #10082023A.

Under the authorization, the Navajo Nation Division of Transportation (DOT) will serve as the fiscal agent responsible for administering the funds. The allocation will support the maintenance and repair of approximately 11.1 miles of unpaved roadway along Navajo Route 41 located on and south of the Peabody Western Coal Company lease area.

President Nygren emphasized the importance of the funding for road infrastructure improvements.

“The remaining commitment totaling $2,250,000 shall be allocated to the Navajo Division of Transportation to be utilized for the maintenance and repair of Navajo Route 41, which is 11.1 miles of unpaved road on and south of the Peabody Western Coal Company leases,” he stated.

The Navajo Nation will apply the funds toward archaeological and biological compliance as well as roadway improvements including road reconditioning, culvert placement, aggregate base course placement, and the application of a double chip seal, with coordination for the transfer of funds to occur through the Navajo Office of the Controller.
