Keeping our elders warm is not optional—it’s essential.

The Iyanbito Senior Center recently experienced an HVAC system failure. While staff from the Senior Center and the Navajo Nation Division of Aging and Long-Term Services work diligently to process a contract for permanent repairs, the Iyanbito Chapter came together to implement an immediate and creative solution.

Through collaboration with the Chapter and NDOH representative Anslem Lewis, a pellet stove was secured to provide much-needed heat during this interim period. The stove is currently warming the dining area, ensuring elders have a safe and comfortable place to gather. The activity area will remain unheated until the HVAC system is fully repaired.

This solution builds on what has worked before—previously, a pellet stove served the community for more than ten years, demonstrating that practical, community-driven actions can make a lasting difference.

“Taking care of our elders means making sure they are safe, warm, and respected at all times,” said Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren. “Even while long-term repairs are underway, we will continue to support creative solutions that protect the health and well-being of our seniors.”

Maintaining proper heat in senior centers is critical, especially for elders with medical conditions who are more vulnerable to cold weather. We extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who stepped up and worked together to ensure our elders are cared for—today and always.
