WINDOW ROCK – Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren recently signed and executed multiple Mutual Aid Agreements, reinforcing coordinated law enforcement efforts across the Navajo Nation and neighboring jurisdictions.

These agreements establish formal partnerships between the Navajo Nation Police Department and the following agencies:

  • Hopi Law Enforcement
  • Navajo County Sheriff’s Office
  • Coconino County Sheriff’s Office

President Nygren advanced these agreements after they were carefully reviewed by the Navajo Nation Department of Justice and approved by legislation through the Naabik’íyáti’ Standing Committee of the 25th Navajo Nation Council. The resolutions passed unanimously, clearing the way for final execution.

The purpose of these Mutual Aid Agreements is straightforward but significant: to ensure stronger coordination, faster response times, and seamless cooperation between law enforcement agencies during emergencies, disasters, and routine cross-jurisdictional operations.

These agreements prevent jurisdictional gaps, improve interagency communication, and ensure that communities have support when it’s needed most. They also honor government-to-government relationships while respecting the sovereignty of each participating nation and jurisdiction.

President Nygren’s action reflects a continued commitment to public safety, preparedness, and collaboration, ensuring Navajo communities are better protected through trusted partnerships.

By completing these agreements, the Administration is strengthening the foundation for safer communities across the Navajo Nation—today and for future generations.
