CHINLE, Ariz. – Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren joined families, students, and community members in Chinle on January 23, to celebrate Homecoming Night and cheer on the Chinle Wildcats as they hosted the Monument Valley Mustangs in an exciting evening of high school basketball.

The night opened with a thrilling varsity girls matchup, with both teams competing with intensity and heart. After a hard-fought contest that went into overtime, the Monument Valley Lady Mustangs edged out the Wildcats with a 62–56 victory, showcasing resilience, composure, and determination until the final buzzer.

In the varsity boys game, the Chinle Wildcats energized the home crowd with a commanding performance, controlling the pace from start to finish and earning an 85–46 win in front of their homecoming supporters.

Beyond the scores, the evening was a celebration of school pride, tradition, and community unity. Homecoming Night brought generations together, filling the gym with cheers, encouragement, and pride for the students representing Chinle and Monument Valley.

“Games like these remind us that athletics are about more than wins and losses,” said President Nygren. “Our young people are learning discipline, teamwork, and confidence. Whether in a close overtime game or a dominant team effort, they are building character that will carry them far beyond the court.”

President Nygren also recognized the dedication of student-athletes, coaches, families, and school staff who support youth through long practices, academic responsibilities, and community commitments.

“When our communities show up for our students, it sends a powerful message,” he added. “It tells them they are supported, valued, and capable of great things—in sports, in school, and in life.”
