GALLUP, N.M. – Navajo Nation President Dr. Buu Nygren joined families, community members, and fans in Gallup to cheer on the Lady Gallup Bengals as they faced the Kirtland Lady Broncos in a highly anticipated matchup between two of New Mexico’s top-ranked high school girls basketball teams.

Beyond the scoreboard, the evening highlighted teamwork, perseverance, and the leadership skills our youth are developing on and off the court.

The game brought together No. 1 Kirtland Central and No. 2 Gallup in a powerful display of athleticism, preparation, and competitive spirit.

Though, Kirtland Central earned a 63–38 victory, the focus was on more than the final score. It was a celebration of dedication, resilience, and community pride, with both teams representing their schools and communities with honor.

“Sports teach our young people lessons that go far beyond the court,” said President Nygren. “They learn commitment, teamwork, and how to face challenges head-on. Watching these athletes give their all reminds us that our youth are building skills and confidence that will serve them for life.”

President Nygren emphasized that events like this bring communities together to uplift students and recognize the hard work they put in long before game day. From early practices to long road trips and balancing academics, these athletes exemplify perseverance and focus.

“Every practice, every game, every school project matters. When our young people feel supported, they carry that confidence into everything they do—whether in sports, school, or in leading their communities.”

He encouraged families, coaches, and supporters to continue showing up for Navajo youth in every arena—sports, education, culture, and leadership.
