Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren and his team have taken every possible step to keep the Ganado Post Office open for the community.
Unfortunately, the United States Postal Service has deemed the current facility unsafe due to serious structural issues and a lack of running water. Because the building has been condemned, the decision to close it is outside the control of the Navajo Nation.
Once informed, President Nygren and his team immediately began exploring solutions. USPS clarified that a long-term lease is required to construct a new post office facility. The proposed site requires a 25-year lease with an option to renew before construction can begin.
To prevent disruption of mail service, USPS will temporarily forward all Ganado mail operations to the St. Michael’s Post Office while the lease process is underway. This ensures residents continue to receive mail during the transition.
President Nygren and his staff are working closely with the Navajo Nation Land Office, site representatives, and legal counsel to expedite review of the lease documents. A lease template is being circulated for immediate review so terms can be finalized as quickly as possible.
Once the lease is approved, construction of a new facility meeting USPS safety and operational standards can begin, with an anticipated timeline of approximately eight months.
While this situation is unfortunate, President Nygren remains committed to securing a permanent solution that restores postal services to Ganado as soon as possible. The administration will provide updates as progress is made.
