WINDOW ROCK — Citing how current law protects employees of the Executive Branch, Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren has vetoed Resolution CJY-25-25 because it would allow the Navajo Nation Council to overstep its reach of employment matters of other branches.

Through Resolution CO-60-17, supervisors are allowed to discipline or fire employees when needed, a management tool to keep projects moving and provide services on time with professional at-will employees.

“We already have enough red tape at the Navajo Nation – red tape that prevents projects or services from getting to our people,” President Nygren said. “We need to increase our efficiency. For this reason, I must veto Resolution No. CJY-25-25.”

If this resolution had passed, it would have created more barriers and slowed down important projects and services for the Navajo people, President Nygren said.

President Nygren also criticized the Navajo Nation Council for being stricter with the Executive Branch than itself, adding that the Council removed two qualified Navajo women attorneys as Attorneys General without giving them a chance to respond.

He also strongly opposed a part of the resolution that would allow a Council committee to look into private employee records, as this would invade the privacy of employees and break trust.

By vetoing this resolution, Navajo Nation leaders are working to reduce unnecessary delays, protect employee privacy, and make sure important projects get done for the people.
