In the heart of Canyon de Chelly, our youth are not just running—they are building strength, purpose, and connection to something far greater than themselves. I had the opportunity to attend the Spring Youth Running Camp at Canyon de Chelly National Monument on March 20, and it was inspiring to see our young people out on the land, pushing themselves.

Throughout the week, youth ages 12 to 18 took part in afternoon sessions centered on running, healthy living, and personal growth. Each mile carried purpose. Each step strengthened not only the body, but the spirit.

On the final day, my staff and I hiked down into the canyon. The cliffs stood tall, the wind moved through the canyon walls, and the land reminded us why these places matter. You can feel it when you’re there.

Programs like this shape strong, confident leaders. They help our youth reconnect with the land, their identity, and the values that guide us as Diné people.

Canyon de Chelly is not only beautiful – it holds our history, our prayers, and our identity. When our young people run these trails, they move alongside the footsteps of our ancestors, carrying that strength into their future.

I commend the National Park Service, Diné Youth, and all partners for making this camp possible. Creating space for our youth to grow in health, culture, and confidence is how we move forward as a Nation.

It was an honor to be there on the final day and witness that journey continue.
