WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — Access to clean and safe drinking water is essential for healthy communities, strong schools, and a brighter future for the next generation. This week, community leaders, educators, and project partners gathered to celebrate the completion of the Window Rock Unified School District Lead Waterline Replacement Project, a major infrastructure investment that strengthens public health and improves water quality for the Window Rock community.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony, hosted by the Arizona Water Infrastructure Finance Authority (WIFA), the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority (NTUA), and the Window Rock Unified School District, marked the successful replacement of aging lead water lines serving teacher housing and associated facilities throughout the district.
The project was made possible through a $6 million financial assistance package approved by WIFA and awarded as a 100 percent forgivable loan through the Supplemental Lead Service Line Capitalization Grant Program. By eliminating repayment obligations, the funding provided significant financial relief while allowing the community to modernize critical infrastructure.
The completed improvements replace outdated lead pipelines with new water systems that meet current state requirements and Environmental Protection Agency Lead and Copper Rule standards. The project enhances water quality, increases system reliability, and protects students, teachers, school staff, and families from potential health risks associated with aging infrastructure.
The project also highlights the importance of investing in educational infrastructure. Safe housing and dependable utility services help support educators and create environments where students can thrive. It further demonstrates the value of partnerships between tribal, state, and local organizations working together to address community needs.
As communities across the Navajo Nation continue to pursue infrastructure improvements, projects like this serve as lasting investments in public health, educational success, and quality of life for future generations.
