RECOGNIZING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2025 AS “NAVAJO NATION SPAY & NEUTER AWARENESS MONTH”

WHEREAS, The Navajo Nation recognizes that responsible animal care and population control are essential to community well-being preventing disease transmissiory and reducing the number of stray animals.

WHEREAS, stray and free-roaming animals suffer, unnecessarily, due to infectious diseases and illnesses such as parvo, rabies, and mange; untreated injuries; battle hunger and thirst, and extreme weather conditions.

WHEREAS, the Navajo Nation is committed to the professional enforcement of Animal Control Laws to protect the health, safety, and property of community members and animals, promoting responsible pet ownership, educating the public through outreach, clinics, and other services in collaboration with internal and external partners;

WHEREAS, partnerships between the Navajo Nation and nonprofit organizations can provide cost effective and sustainable solutions to improve animal health and welfare, public safety, and environmental conditions. Collaboration with nonprofit organizations aligns with the Navaio Nation’s commitment to traditional values, ecological knowledge and promote the preservation and respect for all living beings.

WHEREAS, the Navajo Nation requires the assistance of pet owners to care for their animals using available resources such as spay and neuter clinics, vaccination clinics, and surrender and transfer options; and embody responsible pet ownership. It is the obligation for pet owners to be stewards for all animals – to respect and care for them.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DR, BUU NYGREN, President of the Navajo Natiory do hereby proclaim the month of October 2025 as “Navajo Nation Spay & Neuter Awareness Month,” encouraging community involvement and education to foster a culture of responsible animal stewardship.

The Navajo Nation encourages relevant tribal departments, including the Navajo Nation Animal Control Program, Navaio Nation Veterinary Program, Navajo Nation Department of Resource Enforcement; Navaio Nation Chapters; and other appropriate entities, to assist, coordinate, support and/or partner with external, non-profit animal welfare organizations to provide spay/neuter clinics throughout the entire year, to support the Navajo Nation’s recognition of the preservation of animal health and welfare.
