PROCLAMATION

SUPPORTING AND ENCOURAGING PARTICIPATION IN THE 2023 NAVAJO NATION SPAY NEUTER VACCINATION BLITZ

WHEREAS, the Navajo Nation encompasses over 27,000 square miles with vital animal control, veterinarian, shelter, and other services provided by dedicated organizations, veterinarians, and citizens working to address an estimated 250,000 overpopulation of pets; and

WHEREAS, the Navajo Nation is committed to addressing the issue of pet overpopulation, which has led to various concerns such as livestock loss, public safety, and animal welfare; and

WHEREAS, the Navajo Nation recognizes the need for accessible veterinary services across to promote responsible pet ownership, reduce the number of stray animals, and enhance public safety; and

WHEREAS, the Navajo Nation seeks to preserve the empathy, compassion, and respect for animals intrinsic to Diné culture and to foster these values in children and future generations; and

WHEREAS, through collaborative efforts with the Department of Resource Enforcement, the Office of the Navajo NationPresident & Vice President acknowledges the importance of raising awareness about this initiative among residents; and

WHEREAS, the non-profit Animal Rez-Q Inc., in association with the Navajo Nation and in partnership with Altered Tales, will provide vital veterinary services to 4,000 pets within the Navajo Nation, including spay/neuter procedures and referrals, vaccinations, deworming treatments, and microchipping, with 17 community drive-through vaccination sites available across the Nation for Navajo Nation residents; and

WHEREAS, Navajo Nation residents are encouraged to participate and to assist elderly residents in registering and transporting their pets to the 2023 Navajo Nation Spay/Neuter and Vaccination Blitz; and

WHEREAS, these services promote responsible pet ownership and public safety by decreasing the number of stray animals, preventing the birth of additional puppies and kittens, reducing the risk of animal-related diseases, and ensuring compliance with the Animal Control Ordinance, as amended by Navajo Nation Council Resolution No. CJY-64-18, which mandates microchipping of pets.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Dr. Buu Nygren, President of the Navajo Nation, do hereby proclaim the launch of the 2023 Navajo Nation Spay/Neuter and Vaccination Blitz, and encourage all residents to participate and take advantage of this opportunity to promote responsible pet ownership and to enhance the well-being of their pets and the community as a whole.
