PROCLAMATION
DECLARING THE FIRST FULL WEEK IN MAY NAVAJO NATION TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK
WHEREAS, Teaching is one of the oldest and most revered roles in the history of societies and cultures the world over, with roots stretching back to time immemorial, exemplified by figures and cultural traditions that embody the principles of learning and wisdom; and
WHEREAS, The tradition of valuing education has long been ingrained in the fabric of our Navajo society where, even before written language, education was recognized as essential for leadership and social order; and
WHEREAS, The role of Navajo teachers has evolved yet remains fundamentally linked to fostering knowledge, understanding, and critical thinking in students from elementary through college levels; and
WHEREAS, The first full week of May is designated annually as National Teacher Appreciation Week, a time to honor and express gratitude to educators who enrich our lives and communities with the Tuesday of that week recognized as National Teacher Day; and
WHEREAS, In the Navajo Nation, we recognize our teachers not only as educators but as custodians of our culture, language, and heritage, playing a critical role in sustaining the Diné way of life for future generations; and
WHEREAS, Teachers are deserving of our appreciation and recognition for their invaluable contributions to the promotion of knowledge, respect, and gratitude in Navajo students and for their role in inspiring, challenging, and uplifting the spirit of learning and academic growth.
NOW THEREFORE, I, DR. BUU NYGREN, President of the Navajo Nation, do hereby proclaim May 6-10, 2024, as Navajo Nation Teacher Appreciation Week and call upon the people of the Navajo Nation to join me in showing our appreciation to our teachers.
