WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – On May 31, the best cowboys and cowgirls fill the Dean C. Jackson arena under the Window Rock sunset, and eagar crowd ready for the show.
Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren, and his horse Red, rode into the Dean C. Jackson arena for the government officials’ ride with Speaker of the Council Crystalyne Curley, and head of the PRCA Rodeo, Binion Cervi.
“We have the top cowboys and cowgirls here on the Navajo reservation,” said President Nygren. “We also have thousands of Navajo cowboys and cowgirls, and for them to see that PRCA came here, it’s encouraging.”
The 2024 PRCA Rodeo is running through the Navajo Nation for the first time.
Not only is hosting PRCA an honor to President Nygren, but so is being able to see Navajos be the best of the best.
“Each of these riders has perfected their craft,” said President Nygren. “It’s no surprise they’ve made it here, but I know it took countless days of practicing and sleepless nights to keep working their hardest.”
On a big screen above the arena, each category is described in Navajo, sharing the Navajo language with rodeo fans nationwide.
President Nygren shook hands with the many Navajo and non-Navajo riders before each rode the best they could for the three-day rodeo event.
“I know our cowboys and cowgirls are the toughest,” said President Nygren. “This year, we were able to honor our decades of cowboys and cowgirls who did this daily and continue to carry that tradition on.”
