WINDOW ROCK, Navajo Nation — Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren signed into law legislation that approved a total $3 million for the 110 Navajo Nation chapter governments’ emergency response accounts on Friday. President Nygren received the resolution from the Navajo Nation Council earlier in the day.
“Every single community on the Navajo Nation needs to be prepared and ready-to-go when emergencies are declared,” said President Nygren. “Along with community emergency response teams, disaster relief funding helps when it’s needed right away.”
President Nygren signed Navajo Nation Council Resolution No. CJA-03-23, his first legislation he has enacted as president, before 5 p.m. Friday afternoon. He said his priority in approving the legislation was to ensure all 110 chapters receive the funding as soon as possible.
He cautioned use of the Navajo Nation’s own Unreserved, Undesignated Fund Balance for future funding requests, as the government maintains significant balances in federal funding sources that will need the coordination of the executive and legislative branches to spend down on time. The need for chapters to be prepared, however, is critical, he said.
CJA-03-23 was passed by the council during its winter regular session on Wednesday and included specific funding amounts for each chapter in its exhibits.
