LÓK’AA’CH’ÉGAI – Navajo Code Talker John Kinsel, Sr. was greeted today by contractors, President Nygren, and his Veteran staff, Bobbie Ann Baldwin and Olin Kieyoomiato celebrate day one of an 8-week home renovation on the Code Talker’s home.
Kinsel built this home from the ground up and did not want a new house, as each log holds memories.
He was born in Cove in 1917 and served in World War II, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division Oct. 1942 to Jan. 1946, Bougainville, Guam, and Iwo Jima, which he was awarded the Purple Heart in 1989.
He is Kinłichíi’nii and born for Tábąąhá. His maternal grandfather is Naakaii Dine’é, and his paternal grandfather is Bit’ahnii.
Through dialogue in Diné Bizaad with President Nygren, many smiles and laughter were had as the bright 107-year-old seemed comforted and needed no assistance hearing as the two carried on comfortably.
The Sparrow Group Contractors arrived this morning to begin the renovation and were also a part of the joyous occasion.
Kinsel’s son, Ronald, explained to President Nygren that the last two administrations, spanning a 12-year wait, had promised to renovate the home but didn’t show.
He stated that the family had mended the home independently as repairs came up, with only the manpower and few supplies they had.
Thank you, President Nygren, for keeping your word and giving the Navajo Nation’s oldest war chief a home he deserves, stated Kinsel’s son.
During the small gathering, adorned in his hat, turquoise, and many pins and honors, Mr. Kinsel simply smiled, enjoying the conversation and the honor shown to him by President Nygren.
President Nygren shared he is excited to be back in two months for the reveal. Renovations will include ADA-compliant home, kitchen, water, electricity, bathroom, and energy efficiency to help reduce expenses for coal and wood. Funding will come from Navajo Nation Veterans Housing Trust Fund.
“Thank you for sharing your life with us here on Diné Bikéyah and beyond,” said President Nygren. “You are owed endless gratitude for your service and all you endured physically and emotionally. I am happy you are home and to be by your side today to share this special day with you. Ahéheé Mr. Kinsel.”
