Housing
Homes are available for families that meet the criteria of the respective programs. Housing programs are available for eligible low-income, elderly, and homeless families. Navajo Nation Credit Services provides financing options to assist middle income families. Homesite leases (Trust Land) or residential leases (Allotted Land) are REQUIRED for those seeking housing assistance living on the reservation. Before contacting the programs below please contact your local chapter for housing discretionary assistance (based on fiscal year budget).
How can I get a house?
1) Community Housing and Infrastructure Department (CHID)
Community Housing and Infrastructure Department (CHID) was established in 2008 to assist Navajo Nation members with housing and infrastructure development to homes. For more information call (928)871-6468 or visit https://www.nndcd.org/housing/.
2) Housing Improvement Program
The Housing Improvement Program is a federally funded program that provides housing assistance through new construction to the neediest of the needy Navajo families living in substandard housing and having no other resources for housing assistance. All applications received are reviewed and ranked according to the HIP priority ranking factors outlined in the Code of Federal Regulations (24 CFR Part 256). Call (928)729-4017.
- New Housing – provides a new home if you do not own a home, you may be eligible if you are the owner or leaseholder of land suitable for housing and lease is for not lease than 25 years at the time assistance is received.
- Down payment assistance – helps with those applying for financing from tribal, federal, or other sources of credit, but have inadequate income or limited financial resources to meet the lender’s requirements.
3) Navajo Housing Authority (NHA)
Navajo Nation’s Tribally designated housing entity since 1963. 15 housing management offices located across the Navajo Nation. The most popular programs include the public rental program and the homeownership program.

4) Navajo Nation Credit Service Department
Navajo Nation Credit Service Department – Provides Regular Personal, Home, and Special Personal Loans (employed for two years), to qualified individuals who demonstrate creditworthiness with the ability to repay the loan by the loan terms.

Financial Assistance
A variety of financial assistance programs are available through the Navajo Nation Division of Social Services (DSS) (subject to eligibility and application requirements). Depending on applicants’ home agency, contact a local Navajo Nation Department of Family Services Field Offices or find a DSS office near you.
Beyond financial assistance, the Navajo Nation Credit Services Department offers loan/credit options to assist middle to high income families (subject to eligibility and application requirements).
What kind of financial assistance is available?
1) General Assistance
General Assistance is a federally-funded program that provides essential financial support to individuals within the Navajo Nation who are facing economic challenges. The General Assistance Program is designed to help during times of need, ensuring that basic needs are met, and individuals can work towards greater self-sufficiency.

- Eligibility: To qualify for the General Assistance Program, individuals must meet specific eligibility criteria. Navajo tribal members living in the states of New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah will be referred to the Navajo Financial Assistance Unit to apply for General Assistance. All other Navajo tribal members living in other states should apply with their state General Assistance programs. The Navajo Nation Division of Social Services is available to guide individuals through the application process and determine if they qualify.
2) Community Services Block Grant
Community Services Block Grant is a vital initiative aimed at empowering individuals and families through comprehensive support. This program, funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is designed to address the unique needs of the Navajo Nation community and promote self-sufficiency.
3) Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)

- Requirements:
- Have at least one child under the age of eighteen (18); DSR also serves two-parent families due to unemployment/underemployment.
- Meet income and asset standards.
- Be U.S. citizens; and
- Live within the NNDSR Service Delivery Area (Navajo Nation).
- In addition: If applying for a child that is not related to you, you must have Legal Guardianship/Adoption papers for the child.
4) Navajo Nation Credit Service Department
Navajo Nation Credit Service Department provides personal, home, and special loans, to qualified individuals who demonstrate credit-worthiness with the ability to repay the loan in accordance with the loan terms.
