CHURCH ROCK – After several years of closure, the Church Rock Chapter Senior Center is reopening its doors and restoring essential services for Navajo elders in the community.
“Taking care of our elders means making sure they have safe places to gather, access services, and remain connected to their communities,” said Navajo Nation President Dr. Buu Nygren. “The reopening of the Church Rock Senior Center represents the dedication and teamwork of our DALTCS staff, Church Rock Chapter leadership, Office of Environmental Health, and community members who worked together to restore this important resource for our elders.”
The Church Rock Chapter Senior Center was temporarily closed due to ongoing water system issues that required repairs and corrective action before services could safely resume. The closure affected in-person meals and activities at the facility while necessary improvements were completed.
During the closure, the Navajo Nation Division of Aging and Long-Term Care Services (DALTCS), in coordination with community partners, worked to ensure Church Rock elders continued receiving meal services and support. Elders were able to pick up meals at neighboring locations, including the Iyanbito Chapter, Pinedale Chapter, and Northside Gallup Senior Center.
Following the completion of required work, the Church Rock Chapter Senior Center underwent review by the Navajo Nation Office of Environmental Health (OEH) and received clearance to resume operations, ensuring the facility met health and safety requirements for elders and staff.
Beginning this week, the Church Rock Senior Center will resume services through drive-through meal pickup. Indoor dining services are scheduled to officially return next week, allowing elders to once again gather, share meals, participate in activities, and reconnect with their community.
The Office of the President extends its sincere appreciation to DALTCS staff, Church Rock Chapter officials, senior center employees, OEH personnel, and community members whose dedication and collaboration helped restore these important services.
