To help safeguard communities, livestock, homes, and natural resources during a period of extreme fire danger, Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren has issued Executive Order No. 03-2026, placing the Navajo Nation under Stage 2 Fire Restrictions, effective immediately.

With ongoing high temperatures, dry conditions, strong winds, and low humidity increasing the risk of wildfires, the restrictions are intended to reduce preventable fires and protect the health and safety of the Navajo people.

Under the Stage 2 Fire Restrictions:

  • Fireworks and other pyrotechnic devices are prohibited.
  • Outdoor burning, including trash and field-clearing fires, is prohibited.
  • Open wood, charcoal, and coal fires are not allowed.
  • Chainsaw use and other internal combustion engines are restricted between 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
  • Welding and torch operations with open flames are prohibited.

Certain activities, including approved ceremonial fires, propane-fueled equipment for livestock branding, and other permitted uses, may continue under specific safety requirements and with the appropriate permits.

Violations of the fire restrictions may result in fines of up to $5,000 or restitution. Multiple Navajo Nation departments, along with wildfire response agencies, have been directed to enforce these restrictions to help keep communities safe.

“Protecting our people and our homeland requires all of us to do our part,” said President Nygren. “By following these fire restrictions, we can help prevent devastating wildfires and preserve our lands for future generations.”

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant, follow the restrictions, and immediately report any wildland fires to the appropriate authorities. Together, everyone can help keep the Navajo Nation safe.
