COVE, AZ — On June 18, Navajo Nation President Nygren traveled to the Red Valley and Cove communities to assist with the delivery of food boxes to Navajo elders living in rural areas.

The food distribution effort was coordinated through the Navajo Nation Division of Aging and Long-Term Care Support (DALTCS), which provides nutrition assistance and supportive services to senior citizens across the Navajo Nation. The program helps ensure elders have access to nutritious food while supporting their ability to remain healthy and independent in their homes and communities.

Under temperatures exceeding 90 degrees, President Nygren joined DALTCS staff and local community representatives in delivering food boxes directly to elders, many of whom face transportation challenges and long travel distances to access essential services. During the visits, the team witnessed firsthand some of the daily challenges faced by elders in remote communities. In several homes, water jugs sat empty, and some elders lacked basic necessities. Despite these hardships, each elder welcomed visitors with kindness, humility, and warmth.

As President Nygren sat and visited with community members, elders shared personal stories about their lives, families, and the history of their communities. Many pointed to photographs hanging on their walls, identifying loved ones and recalling cherished memories. Others reflected on the first time President Nygren was elected and spoke about the changes they have witnessed across the Navajo Nation.

One elder sat outside on his porch, seeking relief from the summer heat because it was cooler outdoors than inside his home. Nearby, an old office chair rested beneath a tree, with a radio hanging from a branch playing the familiar voices of KNDN Navajo Radio. The elder shared that he regularly listens to President Nygren’s radio addresses and expressed appreciation for the work being done to improve services for Navajo families.

Throughout the day, elders repeatedly expressed gratitude for the visit. Several shared that it was the first time they could remember a sitting Navajo Nation President visiting their community and entering their homes. Their appreciation reflected the importance of direct engagement and the value of bringing leadership into the communities it serves.

“Our elders are the foundation of our Navajo Nation,” said President Nygren. “They carry our language, culture, and teachings. Visiting with them reminds us why we do this work and why it is so important to continue improving services and opportunities for our people every single day.”

The food box program is part of DALTCS’ ongoing efforts to address food insecurity among seniors and improve the quality of life for elders living throughout the Navajo Nation. Through partnerships with local senior centers and community organizations, DALTCS continues to expand access to nutrition services for elderly residents, particularly in remote communities.
