FORT DEFIANCE, Ariz. – Youth from across the Fort Defiance Agency came together for a day of recreation, learning, and leadership development during the Office of Diné Youth Summer Kick Off event at the Diné Youth Fort Defiance Complex. The event highlighted the importance of healthy lifestyles, positive community engagement, and investing in the next generation of Diné leaders.

Throughout the day, youth participated in basketball clinics, field day activities, skateboarding demonstrations and safety lessons, arts and crafts, educational activities, open gym recreation, and other engaging opportunities designed to promote positive growth and healthy lifestyles. Information booths, lunch, and refreshments were also provided to support participants and their families.

President Nygren spent time interacting directly with the youth, even joining them for a few activities. He skateboarded for a short time at the skate park and later joined some of the youth in attendance for a friendly game of basketball knockout.

President Nygren has long been a strong advocate for Navajo youth, emphasizing that they are the future leaders of the Navajo Nation. He believes investing in young people today helps build stronger communities and creates opportunities for future educators, entrepreneurs, public servants, and community leaders.

“The future of the Navajo Nation is our youth,” President Nygren said. “When we create opportunities for them to learn, lead, stay active, and connect with their culture, we are investing in the future of our Nation.”

The Office of Diné Youth continues that commitment throughout the summer with leadership trainings, cultural enrichment activities, and youth-focused programs across the Navajo Nation. Programs such as Youth Leadership Trainings, moccasin-making workshops, and youth engagement through the Diné Action Plan help young people build confidence, strengthen leadership skills, and remain grounded in Diné values and traditions.

Through these efforts, the Navajo Nation continues creating opportunities that empower the next generation and help prepare future leaders to keep moving the Nation forward.
