NEWCOMB, N.M. – Students, families, faculty, and community members gathered at the Newcomb High School Commencement Ceremony to celebrate the accomplishments and future of the graduating Class of 2026 alongside Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren.
“Graduates, this moment matters,” President Nygren said. “Earning a high school diploma is not easy, and every student sitting before us tonight has a story behind this amazing achievement.”
The evening honored the determination of graduates who overcame challenges while continuing to pursue their goals and support one another along the way. Student speakers reflected on growth, gratitude, perseverance, and embracing change as they prepare for the next chapter of life.
During his address, President Nygren congratulated the graduates for their hard work and reminded them that their journey does not end with a diploma.
He encouraged students to continue believing in themselves through every challenge ahead.
“The challenges you faced did not break you, they shaped you,” President Nygren said. “They built strength, resilience, discipline, and character.”
President Nygren also highlighted the Navajo Nation’s continued investment in education, including increasing Navajo Nation scholarship funding from $3.5 million to $7 million to help create more opportunities for students pursuing higher education and career pathways.
“As I look across the audience tonight, I see future educators, health care workers, engineers, entrepreneurs, artists, public servants, community leaders, and maybe even a future president of the Navajo Nation,” President Nygren said.
The ceremony also recognized student leaders, honor students, and graduates for their academic achievements, leadership, and commitment throughout their high school journey.
Congratulations to the Newcomb High School Class of 2026. Your future is bright, and the Navajo Nation is proud of you all as you continue moving forward toward new opportunities and success.
