WINDOW ROCK — A group of Pennsylvania students stepped beyond the classroom and into the heart of the Navajo Nation this week, gaining a rare opportunity to engage directly with Diné culture, leadership, and history during a visit to the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President.
OPVP staff welcomed a group of students and educators on April 14 from Pennsylvania for an immersive visit centered on learning, culture, and connection.
The group, made up of 11 high school juniors and seniors along with several teachers, traveled to the Navajo Nation to deepen their understanding of Diné history, culture, and governance. Their visit to the Executive Office provided a firsthand look at how the Navajo Nation government operates, beginning with a guided tour led by an in-house community representative.
During the visit, the students met with Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren, who greeted them warmly and created an engaging, personable atmosphere from the start. He shared simple Diné phrases such as “Yáʼátʼééh” (hello) and “Hágoónee’” (see you later), inviting the students to connect with the language and culture in a meaningful way.
The conversation naturally unfolded into a thoughtful exchange about the students’ aspirations, their reasons for visiting, and the importance of understanding Indigenous history. President Nygren spoke about the legacy of the Navajo Code Talkers and the strength of Diné culture, emphasizing the value of identity, resilience, and learning from one another.
Taking time to listen, President Nygren encouraged the students to continue working hard toward their goals and expressed appreciation for their interest in visiting the Navajo Nation and engaging with its people and traditions.
The students, in turn, shared their gratitude for the opportunity to meet with President Nygren and experience the Navajo Nation in such a direct and personal way.
“I would like to thank President Nygren and his staff for a wonderful visit to his office,” said Jeff Rush, founder and director of Three Springs Ministries, who accompanied the student group. “Spending this time with President Nygren was extremely beneficial and so very appreciated.”
