ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The Kirtland Central Lady Broncos claimed the 2026 Nusenda Credit Union Class 4A Girls New Mexico State Championship with a 52–33 victory over the Gallup Lady Bengals at The Pit in Albuquerque, N.M.

The championship matchup featured two of the most successful and respected girls basketball programs in the state, renewing a fierce rivalry that has played out on the state’s biggest stage several times. Just one year ago, Gallup captured the title in this same matchup.

The game opened with Gallup striking first with an early three-pointer before Kirtland responded quickly to keep the game tight. Both teams battled through a defensive and physical first quarter, trading trips to the free throw line and second-chance opportunities. Gallup held a narrow 9–8 lead at the end of the first quarter as both teams played intense, championship-level defense in front of an electric crowd at The Pit.

The second quarter saw momentum begin to swing. Gallup briefly extended its lead with a three-pointer, but Kirtland answered with timely rebounds and outside shooting. Back-to-back three-pointers and strong play at the free throw line allowed the Lady Broncos to build their first significant lead of the game. Kirtland carried that momentum into halftime with a 24–17 advantage.

In the third quarter, Kirtland’s defensive pressure and fast-paced play created separation. The Lady Broncos opened the half with consecutive layups and another three-pointer to push the lead to double digits and force a Gallup timeout. Gallup continued to fight, creating scoring opportunities with steals and trips to the free throw line, but Kirtland maintained control and ended the quarter ahead 33–22.

Kirtland sealed the victory in the fourth quarter with a strong offensive run. The Lady Broncos extended their lead with an and-one play, mid-range jumpers, and additional three-point shooting while continuing to apply defensive pressure. Gallup continued to battle and found late scoring opportunities, but Kirtland’s balanced scoring and defense secured the 52–33 championship win.

With the victory, Kirtland Central captured its 22nd girls basketball state championship, the most in New Mexico history. Nationally, the Lady Broncos program is currently ranked sixth in the nation for the most state championships won by a girls basketball program. In 48 seasons, the program has made 37 state championship appearances and won 22 titles, cementing its legacy as one of the most successful high school girls basketball programs in the country.

The Lady Broncos finished the season with an overall record of 28–3 and a 10–0 district record under head coach Devon Manning.

The Gallup Lady Bengals, led by head coach Todd McBroom, conclude an outstanding season with a 27–4 overall record and 8–2 district record, demonstrating resilience and determination throughout the year and once again competing at the highest level in the state.

Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren congratulated the Kirtland Central Lady Broncos on their championship victory and applauded the Gallup Lady Bengals for an incredible season and their hard-fought effort in the title game.

“The dedication, discipline, and heart shown by both teams represent the very best of our student-athletes,” said President Nygren. “We are proud of our Navajo athletes who represent both Kirtland Central and Gallup. They carry the pride of their families, schools, and communities onto the court, and they bring great pride to the Navajo Nation.”

President Nygren added that moments like these highlight the strength of Navajo youth and the impact of athletics in bringing communities together.

“The hard work these young women put into their sport and their education is inspiring. Congratulations to the Kirtland Central Lady Broncos on their championship, and to the Gallup Lady Bengals on a remarkable season,” said President Nygren. “Our Nation celebrates both programs and the pride they bring to our people.”
